From interconnected devices to sensors and the search algorithms, the collection of data taken from the Internet has resulted in a «goldmine», which has started to be exploited commercially.

Such goldmine determines the success of the electronic devices (wearables), as it was shown in the Mobile World Congress, as well as the service development aimed at consumers and citizens.

After the collection of data, it is necessary to process and analyze it. This is a key moment for entrepreneurs; that is why Barcelona already has a Big Data Centre, where there are congresses and international experts as speakers.

This constitutes a new entrepreneurial panacea for new companies (start-ups) and enterprises.

First Edition of Big Data Congress

Barcelona organizes the first edition of the Big Data Congress on November 3rd and 4th. The event consolidates the city as the capital of smart management of Internet data.

A forecast by Eurecat assures that big data generated from the Internet will create 900,000 job positions in Europe during the next 6 years.

The event has been organized by the Centre of Big Data in Barcelona, together with Eurecat and Oracle.

Within this framework, Barcelona wants to position itself as a technological hub, supported by the Centre of Big Data, which will become a referent in Southern Europe.

Barcelona, the source of information

The city of Barcelona is going through an intense period of technological innovations. In addition to hosting the Mobile World Congress annually, it has been converted into a huge innovation center.

On its way to become a smart city of reference, Barcelona offers a range of equipment permanently connected to the Internet.

Linked development of the work is by the multinational company Microsoft.

The new center will be called the Big Data CoE and will be locate din the Barcelona Growth Center (Media-TIC building). A platform for selling and developing innovative projects, as well as Big Data counselling in order to help the implementation of the technological projects. Projects for an intelligent city

The Big Data CoE Barcelona comes along with the renovation of the old Ca l’Alier factory, located in the district of Sant Marti in Barcelona. A building that will house the center of innovation of the smart cities in 2016.

The new projects market was presented for the European Union about the «Smart Cities and Communities» , whereas Barcelona has joined the energy saving communities, such as the German Colonia and Swedish Estocolmo.

The Growsmarter project wants to showcase the 12 technologies for the intelligent cities with the objective of promoting its implementations. A method to convert the city of Barcelona into an International capital of energy, the usage of Technology and Information and Communication (TIC), as well as mobility.

With this initiative, the energy consumption may be reduced, as well as the gas emissions by 60%.  A path that requires the usage of massive data management (Big Data) according to the needs of the urban society. The information projects the future of the city with sustainable consumption, minor contamination and intelligent traffic gestation.

An intelligent and sustainable city. Barcelona is an innovative city that attracts people as a source of business because of Big data.
